Micah P Hinson - All Dressed Up

It is a difficult thing – producing an album of covers that is more exercise in re-invention then self-indulgence. Unfortunately far too often covers are lesser reproductions of the original or, even worse, travesties. Micah P. Hinson’s latest album, ‘All Dressed Up and Smelling of Strangers’ (excellent title) is a two disc array of covers that manages to produce a range of outcomes.

Many of the songs Hinson has chosen for this album are beyond ‘well known’ (‘The Time Are A’Changin’, ‘Suzanne’ ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?”)yet, whilst turning a well worn song on it’s head can sometimes be illuminating, allowing us to hear the familiar words and melody in a new way, Hinson’s take on these standards doesn’t veer far enough into experimentation. His version of ‘My Way’ does well to strip it of the pathos but his take on ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ could only be described as a failure. The general vintage feel of the album, from CD design through to instrumentation, works best with the more recent tunes such as those from Emmy the Great or Centro Matic.

‘All Dressed Up and Smelling of Strangers’ has its charms but it fails to chart new territory and is, yes, maybe a little self-indulgent. But maybe all music is, at heart, an act of self-indulgence, the only difference being whether that indulgence is appreciated by more then just the artist. After a hard time of it (jail, bankruptcy, homelessness, freak back accident) it could be that what Micah P. Hinson needed, was to self-indulgently immerse himself in his favourite music and share the songs that made him aim to be a musician in the first place. And if you look at the album that way, as someone sharing with you their favourite songs, it is an enjoyable experience (despite the travesties).

Various Artists - Afro-Rock Volume One: A collection of rare and unreleased Afro-Beat quarried from across the continent.

Strut

Musicologist Duncan Brooker took it upon himself to go to Africa on a funk-finding mission during the mid-90’s. Like the Lomax family who travelled across the States during the 30’s uncovering some pretty interesting folk and blues music, the fruits of Brooker’s labour is what we get on this compilation Afro-Rock Volume 1: A Collection of rare and unreleased Afro-Beat quarried from across the continent.

This album was initially released on Brooker’s own label Kona in 2001 and soon went out of print. Fortunately Strut records have taken it upon themselves to reissue the original album with an extra bonus track from Kenya’s Ishmael Jingo. These tracks come mostly from the East end of the continent, primarily Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the recordings do not stray too far beyond the mid-1970’s.

While the 12 tracks that comprise Afro-Rock are not short on originality and are decidedly African in terms of flavour, the American influences do have a strong presence, although one cannot always tell who influenced who first. Gerald Pino & The Heartbeats’ “Heavy Heavy Heavy” has that insistent groove that could have turned up on any number of early JB’s albums whereas Steele Beauttah’s “Africa” would be enough to satisfy any fan of The Meters. While these two tracks and the opening number, Jingo’s “Fever” may be enough to lull the listener into a false sense of funk, the Mercury Dance Band takes the listener into Afro-Cuban/Dizzy Gillespie territory with “Envy No Good”.

The funk soon returns though, albeit with a slight Latin groove with Dackin Dackino’s “Yuda”. At 12 minutes 20 seconds, this is the longest track on the album and definitely the centrepiece. An improvisational execrcise, “Yuda” is reminiscent of the onstage jams that would comprise Santana’s early live performances, and with enough time to throw in a soprano sax solo to boot – this was of course during the days when said instrument commanded a great deal of respect not only because ‘Trane played one but because it’s the hardest of all saxes to master and it had yet to be turned into a laughing stock by the likes on Kenny G.

Orchestra Lissanga’s “Okuzua” could have found it’s way onto any random blaxploitation film with it’s prominent bassline and relentless hi-hat, while Super Mambo 69 takes us back into JB land with “Sweeper Soul”, even if it does over-do it a little bit at the end with its “Sock it to me, baby/give it to me, baby/alright, baby/ride it home, baby, etc”. But hey, sometimes that’s all one needs to get if English is your second language.

Keeping the list at a conservative12 tracks, Booker has assembled a fine array of soul/jazz/funk workouts that should keep most listeners desperately awaiting the second instalment of Afro-Rock.

The latest CSIRO report on WA’s drying climate is a serious wakeup call for the State Government on water efficiency.

I’m mad, you’re mad, we’re all mad here on Movie Squad.

Paul ‘The Mad Hatter’ Grace and Pete ‘The March Hare’ Barr are wondering where Patrick ‘The White Rabbit’ has got to down in Wonderland. He’s a bit late you know…

Meanwhile the pair discuss Movie News over high tea.

There’s controversy surrounding Oscar contender ‘The Hurt Locker’. These sorts of stories always come up in the last week of voting. What’s even more controversial, says Mr Grace, is the news outlets reporting on the controversy are owned by the same people that own the studio producing another major Oscar contender. The first story is a producer of ‘The Hurt Locker’ sent a snarky email about ‘Avatar’ to friends and told them to vote for ‘The Hurt Locker’. The second story is that a real life bomb disposal soldier who was embedded with the writer has sued the film makers claiming that the movie is a carbon copy of the story of his life – he says he even coined the term ‘the hurt locker’.

New films in the works include a big screen treatment of The Smurfs. The film will be a mix of live action and animation and the lead smurf has been named as Neil Patrick Harris of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ fame. Another film in the works is a new ‘Conan The Barbarian’ film – no Arnie but Mickey Rourke is set to appear as Conan’s dad. Warner Bros. are also interested in producing a Space Invaders movie but here on Movie Squad we think that was best done on that episode of Futurama.

The only movie this week is more rom and hardly any com.

‘Dear John’ – Directed by Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Cider with Rosie). Starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried.

Synopsis: While John (Tatum) is on leave in his home town, he finds Savannah (Seyfried), a college student visiting the town. Although love was unexpected, it doesn’t mean they didn’t find it. With the knowledge of John having to leave for the army, their love still lives, until his re-signs on due to the 9/11 attack. Troubles invade and their love is put on hold. One cannot bear it anymore; can the other?

Review: It’s easy to dismiss a film like this as just a chick flick. Has much in common with the wartime melodramas. Getting to know you scenes are a bit cutesy. Quality direction. Doesn’t let it get too schmaltzy. The emotional scenes are not too much. Themes are not talked about out loud as with other films of this genre which is great. An excellent performance by Channing Tatum. He captures the quiet strength and the emotional reserve of a soldier, without being emotionless. Amanda’s is not so well developed. Surprisingly quite a good film. Take that ‘Avatar’!

Eddy Current Suppression Ring – Rush to Relax

In the spirit of Eddy Current let’s keep this review short and loud –“It’s FUCKING good!”

Rush to Relax is raw and raucous, well in keeping with the band’s original ethos. It has a loose structure, but still projects a lot of power.

It’s no great surprise to find that this album was recorded in 6 hours. Mikey Young, in an interview for Unbelievably Bad, said that they were only going to rehearse and record some tracks and accidently came up with some good sounds. I like that, though it does have a, ‘I didn’t study for the test, but secretly I am really really smart” vibe to it. Its good to know that rather than regressing by the conscious push to strike gold a third time, ECSR have stayed the same but definitely progressed into new territory, lyrically.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring’s latest offering makes no great break with their previous output. Like their Primary Colours album, this album has charm of the Australian drawl, screech and yowls. It still sounds like a bedroom/garage session but the lyrics are more emotive. This can be heard in, ‘Gentleman’ – “All I wanna be, All you need from me, is a gentleman”, from an Australian female perspective this song does have swoon worthy elements.

The album kicks off with a track called ‘Anxiety’ and fades out with 15 minutes of lulling ocean noise – sounding a lot like a new-age relaxation tape. The standout tracks are ‘I Can Be A Jerk’ and ‘Walked Into A Corner’. These songs sound more like breaking glass than breaking waves, like someone crashing around a shitty bar while having a really good time.

If a child commits a serious crime as a child, can anything be done to stop them re-offending later in life?

In Britain in 1993, two children were convicted of the murder of toddler James Bulger.

Jon Venables was one of them, and he’s back in the news after being taken into custody following a breach of the conditions of his release from prison in 2001.

So, is the justice system able to rehabilitate offenders who commit crimes as children?

And why do these crimes happen in the first place?

The Federal Government’s proposed mandatory internet filter is due to be introduced to Parliament this month.

Premier Colin Barnett has again defended the new stop and search laws.

He says the laws will only allow police to search using metal detectors similar to the ones at airports… and will only be at late hours of the night in places like Northbridge.

Shadow Police Minister Margaret Quirk says the Premier is not telling the public the full extent of the laws…..

She says police would be able to perform a ‘basic search’ of any person on the street, which includes using metal detectors, patting a person down and removing the first layer of clothing.

This can happen at any time of the day…anywhere.

Basia Bulat - Heart of My Own

They say ‘never judge a book by its cover’…

But, if I’m honest, and I’m sure I owe it to a record as honest and earnest as this one, I had never heard of Canadian, Basia Bulat, and that’s exactly what I did. Looking at the cover of Heart Of My Own with its grainy photo of Basia standing on a quaint country road I thought, ‘looks kind of like it might be a Björk/Sigur Rós kind of feel’. What I got, however, was a very diverse, passionate folk album that with the strong vocals of Basia, reaches into the realms of country.

Heart Of My Own is a bit of a rollercoaster ride, driving a long to strong beats and rhythmic banjo and guitar in first track Go On, the record takes a subtle step back with follow up track Run, and an even further step back with next track Sugar and Spice before picking right back up again with Gold Rush, and so it goes on. In fact, the multi-instrumental Bulat who commands the autoharp, guitar, piano, organ, pianoette, banjo, ukulele and bass on this album manages to evoke the feeling I’m at a particularly raucous and temperamental gypsy party.

Further to that, this record was almost entirely written on the road, touring through Europe, Australia, Canada and the USA many times round. It is perhaps this that gives the record such a broad and adventurous sound that really complements the clever and evocative words which seem to come from a well-traveled heart.

Bulat proves herself a more than capable solo artist, with a strong direction and a proper command of what she wants to say, and how she wants to say it. If Folk is your thing, give her a listen.
