Radiothon 2009: Bring the Noise!

In the lead up to Radiothon 2009: Bring the Noise, (August 21 to August 30) RTRFM 92.1 continues to provide the strongest alternative to commercial and government radio in Perth.

RTRFM has a sharp focus on local music, niche programming and independent thought. And continues to be a beacon of integrity in a media landscape dominated by large corporations and lowest common denominator broadcasting.

We need your help to continue to fight the good fight.

If you have any prizes to donate for Radiothon 2009 please contact Michelle Drabarek at mdrabarek@rtrfm.com.au.

Or perhaps you would like to donate some of your time during the craziest part of the RTRFM year. If you do please contact Eloise Sweetman admin@rtrfm.com.au.

Otherwise keep it locked and save your pennies, so you can subscribe to the sound alternative and help us to continue to Bring the Noise.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/rtrfm/news/~4/zvlMiYI429s" height="1" width="1"/>

WAMi AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The 2009 WAMi Award winners were unveiled last night at the WAMi Awards presentation ceremony hosted by Australian rock and roll icon, Tex Perkins. Throughout the night, WA artists such as The Typhoons and the Kill Devil Hills played live sets, while guest presenters including Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe) and Melanie Greensmith (Wheels & Dollbaby) helped hand out WAMi Awards, otherwise known as WAMingtons!

On the back of the success of their second album Universes, Birds of Tokyo were nominated for five WAMi Awards. Not surprisingly, Birds of Tokyo walked away winners of all five WAMi Awards ' the public voted Most Popular Act, Most Popular Album, Most Popular Live Act and the industry voted awards for Best Rock Act and Best Male Vocalist, for front man Ian Kenny, also of Karnivool.

After turning heads in Australia and overseas, Tame Impala racked up a massive ten WAMi Award nominations. The band scored three WAMis in the end, taking home the award for Most Popular Single/EP for their self titled EP released through Modular, the Favourite Newcomer award and Most Promising New Act beating out stiff competition from Apricot Rail, Boys Boys Boys! and the Scotch of St James.

In the public voted award categories, Faster Louder won their first ever WAMi Award for Most Popular Music Website and popular Fremantle hang out the Fly By Night Musicians Club scored the gong for Most Popular Music Venue. The WAMi for Most Popular Music Video went to Downsyde for their single Fortune and Fame and the folks at Sunset Events once again took home the award for Most Popular Music Event for their festival, Southbound.

In the industry voted awards, Downsyde&#8364;&#8482;s hold on the Best Urban/Hip Hop Act award was finally broken last night, by touring mate Drapht, while VOID were named the Best Jazz Act. On the electro side of things, Tomas Ford won the WAMi for Best Electronic Producer and the UK based Pendulum won the award for Best Live Electronic Act.

Every year, the WAMis pay homage to the Western Australian music figures that feature behind the scenes. The Golden WAMi Award is awarded for contribution to the WA music industry and in 2009; Peter Barr&#8364;&#8482;s two year run with the Golden WAMi came to an end after Kristy Pinder (former Contemporary Culture Program Manager at Perth international Arts Festival) was named the recipient of the Golden WAMi award! Sticking with the ladies, Jodie Regan (manager Tame Impala, Felicity Groom & Mink Mussel Creek) was awarded the Management Award. Local music stalwart Steph Edwardes and business partner Marc English went home winners after their label Good Cop Bad Cop won Best WA Based Record Label.

Community radio legends RTRFM 92.1 were once again named the winners of the Organisation Media Award, while X-Press Magazine&#8364;&#8482;s Bob Gordon reclaimed his throne, winning the Individual Media Award in 2009!

Gots Linux skills and some spare time?

Allen Sewell works with a group of people collecting all sorts of things & sending them to Zambia in Africa for the Hospitals & Orphanages.

The things they send range from old computers to books, hospital beds, medical equipment, clothing, toys, tables & chairs and school equipment. Most of the goods are either donated or picked up from curb pickups when councils have them.

Allen himself works with the computers. He cleans them out of dust & dirt, gets them working, matches them up with keyboards, mice & monitors and sends them to his son who puts Linux on them. Allen's son does not have enough time to do them all so Allen contacted RTRFM to help recruit people who have the knowledge & time to help him out.
